The Graduate Program in Sociology at PSU offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees for those who intend to pursue academic careers in sociology or who aspire to nonacademic research positions.

Masters Degree

The core of the M.A. program is a set of courses designed to enhance students' knowledge of substantive specialty areas in sociology, social theory, sociological research methods, and statistics.

Doctoral Degree

Once the M.A. has been earned (generally at the end of the second year), the emphasis of the program shifts to building competence in major and minor specialty areas. Doctoral students can specialize in standing areas such as: Demography, Family, life course, and aging, Stratification and social change, Social psychology, Classical and contemporary theory, Quantitative methodology, Community and environment.
