What is Special Education?

Special education teachers may work with children, adolescents, or adults with mental retardation, learning disabilities, severe emotional disturbance, physical handicaps, or multiple disabilities.

Career directions with a B.A./B.S.:

Most graduates work initially in entry-level positions in public school-related programs where they plan and develop instructional programs, construct and use evaluative tools, and keep accurate records. Graduates may also find employment in state schools, hospitals, clinics, or centers that deal with individuals with special needs.

Career directions with a graduate degree:

Supervisory and administrative positions in the Special Education system require an advanced degree. Advanced preparation and specialization (e.g., additional course work or practica related to teaching preschool children or individuals with severe disabilities) is available at the master's level.
