What is Human Development and Family Studies?

HDFS students learn how people and families develop - biologically, psychologically, and socially. The major emphasizes the scientific base for understanding development and change in individuals and families, and is interdisciplinary, making use of a faculty of psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, demographers, and biobehavioral scientists.

Career directions with a B.A./B.S.:

Work in daycare centers, drug and alcohol treatment centers, hospitals, child and domestic abuse centers, runaway shelters, and other service agencies. Graduates are also in demand in business and industry for their knowledge of people, group dynamics, training, and program development and evaluation. The HDFS major also provides a foundation for graduate study in the social, behavioral, and health sciences or for advanced professional training in clinical and counseling psychology, social work, law, business, medicine, dentistry, and the allied health professions, such as physical therapy and occupation therapy.

Career directions with a graduate degree:

The Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies prepares students for research and teaching. One can specialize in several areas, including Individual Development, Family Studies, Human Development Intervention and Developmental Methodology.
