The purpose of the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education is to serve citizens of the Commonwealth, nation, and world by providing comprehensive programs in resident instruction, research, and continuing education in teacher and extension education in agriculture and related fields. The degrees conferred include the Master of Science (M.S.) and the Master of Education (M.Ed.) in agricultural and extension education, and the Master of Education (M.Ed.) in youth and family education. The department also confers an academic degree, the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in agricultural and extension education and a professional degree, the Doctor of Education (D.Ed.) in agricultural and extension education.
The primary objectives of the department include: 1) to prepare students to conduct programs and research and to assume managerial positions in public and private youth-serving agencies and foundations concerned with family and youth development; 2) to recruit, prepare, and place qualified teachers of agricultural science to meet the needs of the state; 3) to provide a comprehensive in-service education program, graduate studies, to meet the professional education needs of teachers of agriculture, extension professionals, youth and family professionals, and personnel with similar needs; and 4) to conduct research related to family and youth development, teaching, administration, and supervision of agricultural and extension education in the U. S. and in developing countries.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Agricultural and Extension Education (AEE)
Graduate students in the Ph.D. program explore the frontiers of knowledge in agricultural and extension education or in outreach/extension scholarship through either the agricultural sciences or in the human sciences within community contexts. Our students are a mix of domestic and international students. The later are primarily from developing countries providing a rich and diverse learning environment within the department. Graduates seek careers in higher education in faculty and administrative positions, government, international and domestic non-governmental organizations and development organizations.
Master of Science (M.S.) in AEE
This program attracts students who are interested in either formal education or non-formal education in the agricultural or human sciences. It meets the needs of people currently employed or desiring employment in agricultural and extension education, two-year postsecondary programs, career and technical education administration/supervision positions, extension, private industry, public and private human service organizations, and international education. Our graduates also work for industry, nonprofit organizations, and international agencies.
Master of Education (M.Ed.) in AEE
This program is designed to meet the needs of a person interested in earning a master's degree to support their professional development as an educator from a non-formal perspective as well as assist public school teachers in meeting state mandated professional development requirements. Through the M.Ed AEE Track 1, an individual can earn their degree in residence during the academic year or through annual three-week summer sessions. The M.Ed AEE Track 2 targets individuals who wish to secure teacher certification in agriculture while earning a masters degree.
