Human Electrophysiology Facility

Training

All researchers are provided with training so that all who use the equipment feel comfortable using it and use it safely. New researchers are guided through the entire application process and are shown, through multiple hands-on training sessions, how to apply a 128-channel EEG net, how to reduce scalp impedances to acceptable levels, and how to remove and clean a net after data acquisition--all with minimal discomfort to the participant. In addition to the net application training, our experienced research assistants also explain how to use the accompanying software application to acquire and view EEG data and explain the different features of the software that allow for customized viewing of the incoming data. A description of the system's connections is provided as a part of the training process. Once new researchers demonstrate an understanding of the facility's usage and safety procedures, they are welcome to use the facility free of charge to acquire data for their research.

Additional resources are provided to those using our facility after the initial training. Multiple copies of system manuals provide detailed descriptions of how to use the EEG nets and corresponding software and how to interface the software with other computer applications, such as E-Prime and MatLab. All manuals may be checked out by those using the facility, and are also available online.

For the convenience of those using the facility, written instructions for applying a 128-channel EEG net and instructions for setting up the equipment for data collection have been posted on a secure website that all facility users have access to. The website also has a Quicktime video of a 128-channel EEG net application demonstrated by EGI technicians.

Assistance is offered with the acquisition software used to analyze EEG data to derive event-related potentials (ERPs) and to prepare the data for source localization. These additional resources, along with refreshers on net application procedures and training for new research assistants and lab group members, are all available upon request.
