Co-Funding of Faculty

Evaluation of CYFC Co-Funding Agreements

  • The Director of the CYFC will be responsible for monitoring fulfillment of the terms of the CYFC co-funding agreements.
  • Following the department's annual review of faculty members, department heads will prepare a report for the Director of the CYFC describing the faculty member's and department's participation in activities congruent with the goals of the CYFC and in alignment with the terms of the hiring agreement. Specific questions to be addressed in these reports include:
    1. Is the co-funded faculty's research and teaching activity relevant to the overall goals of the CYFC and consistent with the agreement?
    2. How has the home college and department supported the faculty member in the area(s) that the appointment was intended to enhance?
    3. In what ways has the home college/department demonstrated its commitment to excellence in teaching and interdisciplinary CYFC research and outreach?
  • The CYFC Director will review the reports submitted by department heads each June. Release of funds for the following year will depend upon the receipt of the department head report.
  • The CYFC Director review is not intended to influence the promotion and tenure process and will be conducted after the departmental and college evaluations are completed. The purpose is to monitor the degree to which the position is being used to achieve the goals of and the agreement with the CYFC, rather than to evaluate the faculty member, per se.
  • The CYFC Director will prepare an annual review letter and submit copies to the department head and dean. If concerns arise with regard to the fulfillment of the terms of the agreement with the CYFC, the Director will talk first with the dean and department head. If problems cannot be resolved in these discussions, they will be reviewed in the CYFC Oversight Committee.
  • Co-funding agreements by the CYFC will be made for a 5-year period. Annual reviews will be used to monitor the positions, and to provide a basis of communication among the parties.
  • At 5-year intervals, the CYFC director will indicate in writing, after consultation with the dean of the home college, whether to continue co-funding for an additional 5 years.
  • The CYFC reserves the right to discontinue funding if the faculty member's offer letter states that he or she was hired in an area relevant to the goals of the CYFC, but the faculty member's teaching and research diverge from the broad boundaries of the interdisciplinary goals of the CYFC.
  • The CYFC further reserves the right to discontinue funding if the faculty member's home department and college fail to meet the commitments made in the co-funding agreement negotiated at the time of the faculty hire.
  • Funding will generally terminate 1 year after a decision to discontinue funding has been made, but can be extended for an additional year in exceptional cases.
  • In no case will CYFC co-funding be withdrawn prior to a completed tenure decision.
